Organizing your Literature Search with Citation Manager – Tuesday, October 19 from noon to 1:15 p.m.

In this workshop you will use a citation manager to save references and create accurate in-text references and bibliographies in Word. Please come to the session with EndNote installed. EndNote is available from Software Support. You will learn the benefits of using a citation manager to organize articles and other research sources for your literature review.

Networking in the Digital World – Thursday, October 28 from 2 to 3:15 p.m.

Don't know what angle you should be looking at the camera? Do you know what you'd say to a potential employer if you only had one minute to do a virtual pitch to them? Well, fear no more, because the Career Centre has got a workshop just for you! Learn why networking is fundamental to your future career opportunities and professional relationships.

• Join your fellow grad students, postdocs, SGPS staff and Deans for an evening of fun and connection at SGPS’s Social Night to be held on Gather on Thursday, October 21 from 6 to 8 p.m. Gather is an interactive virtual social platform where users create an avatar and walk around a virtual setting to engage with others through video chat. • Leanne Elliott, a PhD student in Health Sciences, is the recipient of  the prestigious Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarship for her thesis proposal entitled Optimizing Skill Acquisition in Medical Simulations. Leanne’s research focuses on evolving the way we train our first responders, to elevate their performance of perceptual motor skills in high-stakes situations. The Vanier Scholarship is valued at $150,000 over three years.
  
  
• Holly Fruehwald, PhD student in Materials Science, is the recipient of the 2021 ECS Canada Section Student Award. This award is valued at $1,500 USD and recognizes promising young engineers or scientists. Holly's research focuses on the development of non-precious metal materials for applications in clean electrochemical energy technologies.
  
  
• Ana Karen Espinosa Becerra, a Master’s student in Forensic Psychology, was recently announced as a recipient of the 2021 CSA Group Graduate Scholarship. The CSA Group Graduate Scholarship was launched in 2019 in an effort to support students enrolled in Master's programs. Ana’s research focuses on studying adults’ perception of non-native language speaking children and adolescents testifying in legal contexts through a language interpreter.
  
  
• Applications now open for the Ontario Graduate Scholarship valued at $15,000 for one year, and the Canada Graduate Scholarship (Master's) valued at $17,500 for one year. Both awards have an application deadline of December 1, 2021. Learn more about these and other awards on the SGPS website.
  
  
• Applications are now open for the Autism Scholars Award. For the academic year 2022-23, the program offers one one-year award of $18,000 at the master's level, and up to two one-year awards of $20,000 at the doctoral level. Submission deadline is December 1, 2021.
  
  
• Applications for the John Charles Polanyi Prizes are now open, awarded to up to five outstanding researchers or scholars who are in the early stages of their careers. The prizes, each valued at $20,000, will be conferred in the fall of 2022. Submission deadline is December 1, 2021.
  
  
• Applications are now open for the The Power Workers’ Union Transportation Electrification and Smart Grid Research Graduate Awards, each valued at $5,000. Deadline for submissions is Friday, October 29, 2021.
  
  
• Applications are now open for the Zilinsky Graduate Scholarship, valued at $2,500. This award is offered to full-time graduate students in the Faculty of Education conducting research that will lead to new knowledge and benefit the learning outcomes for children with special needs. Deadline for submissions is October 30, 2021.
  
  
• The fall deadline to apply for Graduate Conference Travel Awards for conferences between October 1, 2021 and March 31, 2022 is Sunday, October 31, 2021. For more information visit the Graduate Student Conference Travel Award Guidelines page.
  
  
• The Science to Business Network (S2BN) is hosting the 4^th annual Academia to Industry Meeting (AIM) on Saturday, October 23 from noon to 5:30 p.m. AIM is a multi-university, graduate student careers conference providing an interactive forum for graduate students, faculty and industry professionals in STEM to share career advice, discuss the future of the life sciences industry and network virtually. • The Council of Canadian Academies (CCA) is accepting applications for its 2022 Internship Program. Interns will gain experience working at the interface of science and public policy and participate in the development of assessments by conducting research in support of CCA’s expert panel process. The internship start date is January 10, 2022 with a full-time commitment of six months. Application deadline is October 18, 2021 and applicants must be recent graduates with a graduate or professional degree or postdoctoral fellows. • CAGS is hosting an Anti-Racism Response Training workshop on Saturday, November 6 from noon to 3 p.m. for graduate students and postdocs. The workshop is designed to build awareness around issues of race and racism in Canadian higher education. Learn more and register on the workshop registration page.

The Tri-Council (SSHRC, NSERC, CIHR) offers agency-specific postdoctoral fellowship opportunities. As no internal competition is being held, applicants interested in applying for one of these fellowships should submit directly to the specific agency:

• NSERC Postdoctoral Fellowships - Deadline: October 17, 2021. The NSERC Postdoctoral Fellowships (PDF) program provides support to a core of the most promising researchers with leading-edge scientific and research skills for Canadian industry, government and academic institutions. 

• Writing Workout is an online weekly writing group exclusively for graduate students. It will begin on September 9, no meeting on September 16 or 30, and run through December 17, 2021. Thursdays 9:30 a.m. to noon. Focus on your writing, revising, and reading. Come for part or all the time. Consultations are offered at other times. Pre-registration not required. • Career Centre weekly virtual drop-in sessions are organized for International Students to support their career development. Join drop-in sessions every Wednesday from 1 to 3 p.m. to understand mindset and strategies for landing awesome jobs. To join, visit the Student Life Portal Events and Workshops calendar.
  
  
• Student Life services are being offered at the 61 Charles Street Building. You can book an appointment for writing and career support on the Student Life Portal.
  
  
• Student Mental Health Peer Mentors are undergraduate or graduate students at the university who listen and provide social and emotional support to students in a one-on-one setting. You can learn more about the program for the 2021-2022 academic year as well as book an appointment online.
  
  
• Career Centre virtual drop-in sessions happen on Wednesday’s from 1 to 3 p.m. and are organized for International Students to support their career development and employment journey. No appointment is needed. For more info and the meeting link visit the Student Life Portal.

• The Teaching and Learning Centre (TLC) Workshop Schedule is now live. Workshops are facilitated by Faculty Development Officers, Teaching Scholars in Residence and Subject Matter Experts. All workshops are fully online. Experienced and new educators are encouraged to participate. More details are available on the TLC website.

• The third annual Women for STEM Summit is happening on Thursday, October 14 from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. This virtual Summit will explore various viewpoints on the challenges faced by women and how COVID-19 has changed the way we live and work. Visit the event page to learn more and register. 

• Open Access Week is coming up, and the Library is hosting a workshop on finding Open Data! We also have research data management workshops, where you’ll learn how effective RDM relates to grants and funding. Visit the Library’s Workshops and Events page for dates, times, and registration.

• There is a dedicated Subject Specialist Librarian for your faculty! Book an appointment with your subject Librarian to discuss all the ways we can support you from the start of your research through to publication.
  
  
• The Library offers specific services to support Graduate Students at every stage of your program and research! Connect with us to get assistance on accessing the resources you need, literature search, citation management, research profiles and metrics, and research data management.

• Student Awards and Financial Aid (SAFA) is currently confirming enrolment for fall OSAP. Be sure your course load matches your application—if not, this delays the release of your funds. Make updates with SAFA at connect@ontariotechu.ca.
