Grad and Postdoc Engagement

  • Over three consecutive days, June 13 to 15, the Graduate Writing Boot Camp will give you a productive, distraction-free work environment and space to make significant progress with your writing. The class is limited to 20 students, so be sure to register!
  • Did you know that SGPS now offers Grad Pro Skills self-directed e-learning? Develop knowledge mobilization skills, enhance your teaching with modern pedagogy and technology, and ready yourself for an inclusive 21st century workplace. With self-directed e-modules and e-courses, you can learn at your own pace, at any time, from any where. Register today!

May workshops:

Conferences 101 - Tuesday, May 30 from 2 to 3 p.m.

In this workshop, we will discuss different types of academic conferences and presentations, why we should attend, how to prepare, and how to get the most out of the conferencing experience. 

June workshops:

Paraphrasing and Summarizing - Monday, June 5 from 12 to 1 p.m.

Integrating research in written work is an essential skill, although it is one with which many writers struggle. After considering the characteristics of each, you will have the opportunity to practice writing paraphrases and summaries as well as assess their effectiveness.

LinkedIn/Job Searching - Thursday, June 22 from 1 to 2 p.m.

In this workshop, you will learn the benefits of a LinkedIn profile, the best ways to start, create, edit or update your profile, and how to connect with recruiters and potential employers on the world’s largest recruitment website!

SGPS Updates

  • Congratulations to Sarah Rijkenberg, Applied Bioscience PhD candidate and 2023 Ontario Tech 3MT champion, for winning second place at the 2023 Ontario 3MT competition! Sarah will represent Ontario at the National 3MT Showcase in November. This is the second year in a row that Ontario Tech placed in the top spots at Provincials. 

  • Reminder! Nominations for the 2023 Graduate Excellence Awards are now open. Nominations close Thursday, June 1, 2023. The Graduate Excellence Awards recognizes the achievements of our faculty, postdoctoral fellows, staff and students in the following areas:

  • Are you defending your thesis in the Spring/Summer 2023 term? There are specific thesis formatting requirements, defence timelines and other helpful resources found on the SGPS website. Please also feel free to review additional information about thesis papers/projects found in our FAQs. If you have any questions, email gradthesis@ontariotechu.ca.

  • The IDRC International Doctoral Research Awards (IDRA) call for applications is now open. There are 24 awards of up to CA$20,000 each. Visit the IDRC-IDRA website to learn more. Application deadline is Monday, July 17, 2023.

  • CAGS is offering another round of their Anti-Racism Response Training on Thursday, May 25. This workshop is designed to build awareness around issues of race and racism in Canadian higher education. Two identical workshops will be held on Zoom. Visit the event page to register.

Student Life

  • The library’s Seed Exchange is now open. Visit any of our campus libraries, choose up to five packets of seeds and plant, grow, enjoy, and share! Seed variety differs in each location and may change on availability. Donations are always welcome; however, we do not accept corn, soy, canola, or rose seeds. Any controlled substances are unacceptable.
  • Your summer bucket list should include Wavemakers, to develop your skills and expand your network! It is a free, part-time, eight-session, virtual reality work-integrated learning program designed for post-secondary students that fits into your schedule. Wavemakers offers $200 in financial support and awards a $2000 scholarship per cohort. The program includes a virtual Career Fair that connects you with employer partners like Deloitte, IBM, BMO and more! Sign up for an upcoming cohort.
  • The Career Centre has a variety of workshops that are designed to help students who are job searching, going to work for the first time, or entering a new workplace. Learn more and register for a workshop today!

  • The Career Centre and Devant have joined together to provide career supports for international students. Check out, and register for all the great workshops that are happening in May!

  • Recovery College is a collaboration between Ontario Tech University and Ontario Shores Centre for Mental Health Sciences. The two courses that will be held over the Spring/Summer semester are Let’s Act on It: Managing Stress and Wellness through Words: Book Club. To view the course descriptions and register, visit the mental health groups web page.

  • Could you use a bit of stretch-and-unwind at the end of each week? Yoga is an ancient and evidence-based practice that can help you to unwind your nervous system. Sessions will be held virtually through the Spring/Summer semester on Fridays from May 26 to August 18 from 1:15 to 2 p.m. To derive the greatest benefit from this practice, you will need a quiet space and a yoga mat. Register to attend!

  • Student Mental Health Services continues to offer a range of groups, workshops and events to support your mental health. If you would like to participate in one or more groups you can register now.

Money Matters

  • 2022/2023 OSAP Extension Form is available! If you are an OSAP student taking full-time classes in the Spring/Summer term, complete an OSAP Extension Form. Do not apply through the OSAP website.

    If you’re studying part time, please apply for part time OSAP funding via the OSAP website.
