Grad and postdoc engagement

Registration for our July Grad Pro Skills workshops is now open! Develop your interview skills and learn how to write a winning grant application. There’s still time to register for our June events. Join one of our campus librarians as she teaches you how to take control of your public research profile and be sure to register for the Student Learning Centre’s 'Shut Up & Write' event for graduate students.

Special event

Shut Up & Write for Graduate Students – Monday, June 21 from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m.

Stop talking about writing. Stop reading about writing. Stop thinking about writing. Let's write! It doesn't matter if you are working on a thesis chapter, literature review, conference paper or proposal - the Student Learning Centre's 'Shut Up and Write!' event provides a supportive environment where everyone has the same goal. There will be two writing sessions and scheduled breaks. Attendees will also have the opportunity to meet individually with a Writing Specialist for a 15-minute writing consultation. June workshop

Making an Impact: Sharing and Protecting your Research Identity – Tuesday, June 22 from noon to 1:15 p.m.

In this workshop, you will learn how to take control of your public research profile and track the impact of your publications and research activities. You will also use research metric tools and checklists to evaluate journals and conferences as possible venues for your research. 

July workshops

Interview Skills – Thursday, July 8 from 11 a.m. to 12:15 p.m.

This interactive workshop helps you develop the tools you’ll need to be successful in your academic and non-academic job search. Learn how to answer the most common types of interview questions, how to best prepare for the interview process and how to emphasize your transferable skills. 

Grant Writing: How to Write a Winning Grant Application – Tuesday, July 20 from 2 to 3:15 p.m.

This workshop addresses both practical and conceptual aspects that are important to the grant writing process. It is designed for graduate students considering a career in academia. Emphasis is given to such things as idea development, identification of the most appropriate granting agency and how to write for reviewers.

SGPS updates

  • The School of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies (SGPS) is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Ami Mamolo as Assistant Dean, effective July 1, 2021, for a two-year term. Dr. Mamolo is an Associate Professor in the Faculty of Education and is a researcher in mathematics education. Over the past 15 years, she has taught and mentored graduate and postdoctoral students at three different universities. She has also served on program development and program review committees for existing and proposed new Education graduate programs. 

    SGPS would also like to announce that Alena Shah will be joining SGPS as Manager, Graduate and Postdoctoral Affairs, starting June 16, 2021.  Andra Drinkwalter has accepted a new position as Director, Student Financial Assistance and Enrolment Services, Office of the Registrar, effective July 5, 2021.

    Alena has been with Ontario Tech for over 10 years and is well versed in the university’s operations, programs and governance. Alena is passionate about graduate studies and graduate student success.  She holds a Master of Education from York University and is currently pursuing an EdD with Western University. 

    Please join us in welcoming our new team members and wishing Andra Drinkwalter much success in her new role!

  • The Banting Postdoctoral Fellowships program is underway. The internal deadline for applications to the School of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies (SGPS) is Friday, July 30, 2021 (12 noon). Full details on the application requirements and process can be found on the SGPS website.

  • Are you planning to defend your thesis in Spring/Summer 2021? There are deadlines to guide students for completing program requirements by the end of an academic term. Guidelines (Master’s/PhD), timelines/deadlines (Master’s/PhD) and other resources (e.g. deadline calculator) can be found on the SGPS website or in the Academic Calendar.

  • Are you beginning to format your thesis for defence? Be sure to check the thesis website every term for updated forms and resources.

  • Registration for the annual SHARCNET Summer School on Advanced Research Computing is now open. The school is an annual educational event for graduate and undergraduate students, postdocs and researchers who are engaged in compute-intensive research. These schools are free and provide beginner-to-intermediate level courses on a wide range of subjects. All attendees are required to have a Compute Canada account before registering for Summer School courses.

Postdoc news

  • The Provost’s Postdoctoral Awards for Indigenous and Black Scholars are an integral element of the University of Calgary’s commitment to creating and supporting Equitable Pathways to produce the next generation of diverse researchers and community engaged scholarship. These awards will provide salary support and access to mentorship to eligible applicants who are Canadian citizens or permanent residents of Canada. Value of $50,000 salary per year plus benefits (Plan C, CPP, EI and WCB), plus $5,000 research allowance. Deadline to apply is June 18, 2021. Teaching and Learning

  • The Teaching and Learning Centre (TLC) LMS P2P (Peer to Peer) Support Team offers training and drop-in support for Google Meet, Kaltura, Canvas and other Ed-Tech Tools. The Training Schedule is available on the TLC website as well as presentation slides and other resources created by students for students!

Campus announcements and events

  • Join us for a virtual walking event where you get to be outside, socialize and relax! This walk will be taking place on Wednesday, June 16, 2021 at 11 a.m. to noon. You are required to have access to data on your smartphone or tablet. Register on the Student Life portal.

  • Being prepared for travelling is one of the best ways to ensure a smooth transition as an international student in Canada. The Destination Ontario Tech workshop on Tuesday, June 22 from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. will cover all aspects of the travelling process such as important/required documentation, what to expect while travelling, how to prepare for quarantine and more!

Money matters

  • Remember to review your tuition balance on MyCampus and tuition deadline dates on the SGPS website. The Spring/Summer OSAP extension form is still available on MyCampus for OSAP Graduate Students. It can be found under the OT Documents tab within the Student Awards and Financial Aid section.
