Grad and Postdoc Engagement

September Grad Pro Skill workshops:

Writing a Review of Literature - Tuesday, September 13 from 1 to 2:15 p.m.

A literature review is a summary and evaluation of significant documents and developments on a topic. Completing a literature review will ensure a good understanding of a topic. In this workshop you will learn how to properly construct a literature review and how to organize your research.

Starting Off Strong: Digital Library Resources 101 - Thursday, September 15 from 12 to 1:15 p.m.

In this workshop you will learn all about accessing academic journal articles and books online with ease, the benefits of an online research consultation with your subject librarian, and how to access specialized digital resources like datasets, cases, patents, and standards. 

Conflict Management - Wednesday, September 21 from 2 to 3:15 p.m.

This workshop encourages critical thinking, provides problem solving strategies and teaches conflict management skills. Critical and creative thinking, conflict resolution and problem-solving skills are essential for being successful. 

Introduction to Research Data Management - Tuesday, September 27 from 1 to 2:15 p.m.

In this workshop you will learn about current best practices for research data management, how effective research data management relates to grants and funding, and how to get started on creating a research data management plan.

SGPS Updates

  • Are you defending your thesis in Summer 2022? Once you have successfully defended your thesis and completed any revisions, you must formally submit a thesis package to SGPS by August 24, 2022. If you have any questions, email gradthesis@ontariotechu.ca

  • Students/supervisors are required to submit research progress reports at the end of each academic term. Research progress reports are a useful tool to connect with your supervisor and to document your research success/struggles and future goals. Download the form on our website to begin documenting your progress.

  • All students expecting to complete their program by the end of the summer should apply to graduate. The application will become available on August 31 and will close on October 1. Students who do not apply during the window and apply late will be subject to a late fee.

Postdoc News

  • The Tri-Council (SSHRC, NSERC, CIHR) offers agency-specific postdoctoral fellowship opportunities. As no internal competition is being held, applicants interested in applying for one of these fellowships will submit directly to the specific agency:

    • SSHRC Postdoctoral Fellowships - Deadline: September 14, 2022. SSHRC fellowships support the most promising new Canadian scholars in the social sciences and humanities.
    • NSERC Postdoctoral Fellowships - Deadline: October 17, 2022. The NSERC Postdoctoral Fellowships (PDF) program provides support to a core of the most promising researchers with leading-edge scientific and research skills for Canadian industry, government and academic institutions. 
    • CIHR Postdoctoral Fellowships - Deadline: October 5, 2022. CIHR Postdoctoral Fellowships provide support for highly qualified applicants in all areas of health research at the post-PhD degree or post-health professional degree stages.

      Please note, SGPS does not have access to view applications in progress. If you are interested in applying to the CIHR Postdoctoral Fellowship program you must notify SGPS via email to postdocs@ontariotechu.ca of your intent to apply.

      SGPS is responsible for final approval of all CIHR submissions and will submit applications promptly on the competition deadline.

  • Save the date! As part of Postdoc Appreciation Week, CAPS will be hosting a series of virtual sessions on Data Science Transition, Research during difficult times, Knowledge Mobilization and Celebrating postdocs. The sessions will run via Zoom between 1 and 4 p.m., September 19 through 23.

  • The Career Centre and Devant have joined together to provide career supports for international students. Check out, and register for all the great workshops that are happening in August!

  • Bannock and Books is an Indigenous book club series designed to explore Indigenous culture and ways of knowing. This featured book for the September Sharing Circle is Beyond the Orange Shirt Story by Phyllis Webstad. Register for your copy of the book and the Sharing Circle, hosted on Monday, September 19 from 6 to 7:30 p.m.

  • The Part-Time Job Fair is happening on Thursday, September 8 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in Shawenjigewining Hall atrium. Bring your resume and be prepared to chat with various employers including:

    • The City of Oshawa
    • Compass Early Learning and Care
    • Waypoint Centre for Mental Health Care

  • The Visiting Elder Program provides the university with an opportunity to learn from an Indigenous Elder. Elders are important members of First Nation, Métis, and Inuit communities and are recognized for their knowledge, experience, wisdom, harmony and balance. Pat Green will be hosting virtual sessions the week of October 3 to 7. Register for a visit today!
