SGPS updates

  • The School of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies (SGPS) is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Ami Mamolo as Assistant Dean for SGPS effective July 1, 2021. Dr. Mamolo is an Associate Professor in the Faculty of Education and a researcher in mathematics education. Welcome to SGPS!

  • SGPS wants to hear from you! Tell us about your graduate student experience at Ontario Tech by filling out our survey. Submissions received by April 30 will be entered into a draw to win a $25 gift card!

The 2021 Graduate Excellence Awards are underway! Do you know an outstanding graduate student, postdoctoral fellow, faculty or staff member? Nominate them for a Graduate Excellence Award!

Award categories:

Nominations are open as of Thursday, April 15 through Tuesday, June 15, 2021. Visit the Graduate Excellence Awards page on the SGPS website to learn more about the awards and to submit nominations.

  • Are you defending your thesis in Winter 2021? Once you have successfully defended your thesis, you must formally submit a thesis package to SGPS. Existing post-defence thesis submission deadlines still apply unless you receive an official notification from SGPS announcing any changes. Please contact gradthesis@ontariotechu.ca if you have any questions pertaining to your thesis submission.

  • Students and supervisors are recommended to submit research progress reports as per normal. Research progress reports are a useful tool to connect with your student. We hope you view this as an opportunity to discuss and to document the past terms goals.

  • The Society of Canadian Women in Science and Technology (SCWIST) is hosting the SCWIST Symposium for young Scientists. Abstract applications are due April 15, 2021. For more information and to apply, visit the SCWIST Science Symposium website.

  • The Irish Research Staff Association (IrishRSA) and the International Consortium of Research Staff Associations (ICoRSA) invite researchers to attend the 1st International Online Forum on Research Careers and Policy on Thursday, May 6, 2021. Learn more and register on their event page.

Student Life

  • Interested in graduate writing support this Spring/Summer term? The Student Learning Centre is seeking your input for the upcoming semester including a Virtual Graduate Writing Boot Camp event. Please take a moment to fill out our survey to help us meet your writing goals!

  • Students who identify as Indigenous are invited to attend the Indigenous Student Recruitment Initiative on April 28 at noon. Hear from former participants and learn about upcoming job opportunities for the summer and beyond! Register on the Student Life Portal.

  • Student Leadership Award nominations are extended to April 30: Do you know a student who has exemplified leadership in the campus community? Graduate students are eligible for the President's Award of Excellence which includes a $500 award. Find out more on the Student Leadership Awards of Recognition page.

  • Are you passionate about wellness and an advocate for mental health? Then consider joining the Student Mental Health Advisory Committee and be part of making a difference. Learn more about the program and how to apply on the Get Involved in Mental Health page.

  • Learn strategies for wellness and resiliency with the Mindfulness and Self-Compassion support group. Running on Thursdays at 11 a.m. starting on May 20, everyone is welcome! Register on the Support Group website.

  • Are you interested in working in the manufacturing sector? The Northumberland Manufacturer’s Association is hosting the Tri-Association Virtual Manufacturing Career Fair on May 6. Registration is required. Learn more about the companies hiring, and the available opportunities on their Career Fair page.

  • Calling all graduating students! Get workplace ready with iLaunch workshop series from May 3 to 7, hosted by the Career Centre. Each day will feature employer and alumni speakers to provide insights and tips to prepare you for success. Register on the Student Life Portal.

  • Road to Equity drops its latest podcast episode, Equity in the Workplace, with special guest Nermin Abdulla, hosted by Ontario Tech student Rachel Lynds. Check it out online or wherever you get your podcasts!

  • Check out the latest articles on the Digital Community. Just in time for the end of the semester, we've got tips to focus and get work done in "Study with YouTube".

Campus Announcements and Events

  • The Exam Hub will be live from April 14 to 25. The Exam Hub provides resources to assist faculty members and students during the exam process. Updates can be found on the Teaching and Learning Centre (TLC) website for students and instructors.

  • There is still time to apply for the Brilliant Catalyst Summer Incubator! The Brilliant Incubator is a four-month program that runs during the Summer. Participants will attend interactive virtual sessions, learn in-demand entrepreneurial skills, receive mentorship from industry experts, and have the opportunity to receive funding. Deadline to apply is April 18, 2021.

  • Are you interested in raising awareness about refugee resettlement or forced migration? Are you interested in providing support for refugee students to gain post-secondary education? If so, join the World University Service of Canada team! For more information about the position and the application form, check out the job description.

Money matters

  • 2020-21 OSAP Extension Forms are available! If you are an OSAP student taking a minimum of three classes in the Spring/Summer, complete an Extension Form once you are registered for classes. It is available under the Graduate Finance Forms section of the OT Graduate Studies Forms tab within MyCampus.
