Grad and Postdoc Engagement

  • Registration for the 2023 Three Minute Thesis (3MT®) competition will open on Friday, January 13, 2023. 3MT® is a university-wide competition for graduate students in which participants present their research and its wider impact in three minutes or less to a panel of non-specialist judges. January workshops

Starting Off Strong: Library Resources 101 - Wednesday, January 11 from 1 to 2 p.m.

In this workshop you will learn all about accessing academic journal articles and books online with ease, the benefits of an online research consultation with your subject librarian, and how to access specialized digital resources like datasets, cases, patents, and standards. 

Presentation Skills - Tuesday, January 17 from 12 to 1 p.m.

A clear and concise presenter, a visual presentation and engaging content are some of the keys to keeping your audience’s attention in a presentation. In this workshop, you will learn what makes a great presentation and what you can work on to develop your skills.

*This workshop is a requirement of the Professional Communication Certificate

Writing a Review of Literature - Thursday, January 19 from 1 to 2 p.m.

A literature review is a summary and evaluation of significant documents and developments on a topic. Completing a literature review will ensure a good understanding of a topic. In this workshop you will learn how to properly construct a literature review and how to organize your research.

(NEW) Diversity and Discrimination in the Recruitment Process - Wednesday, January 25 from 2 to 3 p.m.

SGPS Updates

  • News release: Ontario Tech celebrates the 2022 SGPS Graduate Excellence Awards winners!

  • Holiday closure notice: the university will be closed for the holiday break from December 24 through to January 2, 2023. Our office will re-open on Tuesday, January 3, 2023.

  • Students and supervisors are required to submit research progress reports at the end of each academic term. Research Progress Reports are a useful tool to connect with your supervisor and to document your research success/struggles and future goals. Download the form to begin documenting your progress for Fall 2022.

  • The deadline to submit Thesis Packages and Certificate of Approvals (COA) to SGPS is December 16, 2022. Thesis packages/COA's received after this deadline, will result in fees for Winter 2023. For thesis packages/COA's received early in the Winter 2023 term, a tuition refund may apply.

Student Life

  • The Visiting Elder program will be back for the week of February 6 to 10 with Sylvia Maracle in-person! Sylvia is an in-demand consultant, speaker, social activist and cultural-based practitioner. She is actively involved in diverse initiatives supporting the well-being of Indigenous peoples across Canada. Sylvia was awarded an Officer of the Order of Canada in 2017. Register for a session with Sylvia today.

  • The Career Carnival is in-person this year in the SHA Atrium on Tuesday, January 24 and Thursday, January 26! This is your opportunity to stop by for some fun interactive games and activities that will help you with cover letter and resume writing, practice your networking and interview skills, and get career guidance. If you are looking for graduate employment, part-time jobs or co-op and internship opportunities, the Career Carnival is the place for you!
  • The Advisory Committee on Student Sexual Violence Prevention and Support is recruiting student representatives for a term from January 2023 to April 2024. In this role, you will have the opportunity to provide advice and guidance to the Provost on the university’s efforts to oppose sexual violence among students on campus. We encourage all students that are interested to apply by Monday, January 16, 2023.
  • Student Life and the International Office are recruiting for the 2023 to 2024 Student Leadership positions. Applications close on Sunday, February 5, 2023. Visit the Leadership positions website for more information including the volunteer descriptions and to submit your application.
  • The Career Centre has a variety of workshops that are designed to help students who are job searching, going to work for the first time, or entering a new workplace. Learn more and register for a workshop today!

  • The Career Centre and Devant have joined together to provide career supports for international students. Check out, and register for all the great workshops that are happening in December!

  • Conversation Café runs on Thursday's from 3 to 4:30 p.m. This is an opportunity to meet international students and learn about other cultures as well as a chance to practice English speaking and listening skills. Visit the Student Life Portal to view the schedule and register.

  • Student Mental Health Services continues to offer a range of groups, workshops and events to support your mental health. If you would like to participate in one or more groups you can register through the Student Life site.

  • Wellness Walks is a free and fun opportunity that promotes physical and mental health by taking mindful walking breaks during the busy school and workday. Come out for a walk to restore your concentration, uplift your mood, decrease your stress and be a part of your campus community. All students, staff and faculty are invited to participate. Please dress for the weather, wear appropriate shoes for walking and bring a water bottle! View the schedule of walks on the Wellness Walks website.
  • Afternoons with SEE run weekly on Tuesday’s from 2 to 4 p.m. in SHA 210 - all students are welcome to drop in and join the Student Engagement & Equity team to hang out, play games, meet others and enjoy refreshments.

Campus Announcements and Events

  • SSHRC's Storytellers Challenge invites postsecondary students to show Canadians, in up to three minutes or 300 words, how social science and humanities research affects out lives and our world. 25 finalists receive $3,000 and specialized training in research communication. The deadline to submit your story is January 30, 2023. 

  • The Library invites you to try a new resource! Access exclusive O'Reilly resources including video courses, code snippets, certification prep, etc. Topics range from AI, data, UX design, finance, programming, and more. The trial runs until January 30, 2023. Be sure to share your feedback.

  • Join Cultural Links where you can:

    1. Connect with a diverse group to enrich the diversity that exists
    2. Cultivate a broader understanding of various cultures and experiences
    3. Create an opportunity for you to share your own cultural heritage with other students

    Sign up before January 25, 2023.

  • The Canadian Association of College & University Student Services (CACUSS) is seeking Graduate Student Interns for the following positions: Research and Writing Intern, Media Project Intern, and Oral and Written History Intern. Applications are due December 20, 2022. View the posting for more information.

Money Matters

  • Always apply for OSAP. Many variables when assessing your OSAP and eligibility to receive funding could change every year. Also, make sure your winter semester course load matches what's in your OSAP application—if not, this will delay the release of your second semester funding. Make updates with SAFA.
